Out of Print was an installation examining our relationship with digital news. Using live data feeds, a custom built application allowed users to generate seemingly random headlines. These were then set and printed by hand to form a growing collection of posters.
Context
Every day we’re faced with ever growing amounts of information. We find ourselves at a saturation point, whereby attempting to consume more, we end up understanding less. In this context, news consumption is being redefined for shortened attention spans.

How do we make sense of all the information we consume and not get lost in the process? Out of Print explored this question through the use of natural language processing software and traditional printing techniques.
Out of Print puts the height of technology toe to toe with Gutenberg’s 15th-century breakthrough, with quite brilliant results.
We Heart
Installation
An online application combined data from a range of live news feeds, allowing users to select words to generate a new headline. These headlines were then hand-printed using a custom-built letterpress, forming a growing collection of prints.

Both the software and the print process produced unexpected results. The distortions and juxtapositions in language generated a set of headlines that were profound and confusing in equal measure; not unlike our evolving relationship with digital media.
Out of Print was a collaboration between Six:Thirty, Danilo Di Cuia, Hefin Jones, Andrea Mourdjis, Monika Patel, Candyce Dryburgh, Verity Nichols, Daisy Saul and Katinka Schaaf.
